Jolly Rogue Co. Center Console MOLLE Panel – Development Journal Entry 07 – Final System

Following multiple iterations of bracket geometry, panel shape, and console interface testing, the center console MOLLE mounting system reached a stable configuration.

The final design consists of a modular panel and bracket assembly that mounts to the side of the center console without permanent modification to the vehicle interior. The system relies on geometric constraint, controlled compression, and a supplemental fastener to maintain positional stability during vehicle operation.

Two panel configurations were ultimately developed during the design process. Both panels share the same bracket architecture and mounting strategy, allowing them to be installed using the same bracket components.

Panel Configuration

Two MOLLE panel variants are available within the final system.

  •  6 × 6 MOLLE Panel

The baseline configuration is a 6 × 6 MOLLE panel, providing a compact mounting surface within the original design envelope established during early development.

This configuration prioritizes minimal footprint while maintaining compatibility with MOLLE-compatible accessories. The panel geometry remains largely planar and mounts exclusively through the bracket system using hardware passed through selected MOLLE slots.

Because the 6 × 6 panel maintains a smaller surface area and reduced leverage relative to the console, the bracket system alone provides sufficient structural stability for this configuration.

  • Contoured Extended Panel

A second configuration introduces a contoured panel design that expands the usable mounting area by approximately two and a half additional MOLLE columns.

The panel incorporates a slight contour along the console-facing surface to better follow the natural profile of the center console while extending the mounting surface outward. This additional mounting area increases the available attachment space for MOLLE-compatible accessories.

Due to the increased size of the panel, the contoured version also includes an additional mounting hole aligned with the factory center console fastener location. This allows the panel to utilize the stock console hardware as a supplemental attachment point.

The added fastener provides an additional positional reference and improves resistance to movement introduced by larger mounted accessories while maintaining compatibility with the same bracket architecture used by the smaller panel.

Bracket System

The mounting structure uses two independent sheet metal brackets, positioned near the forward and rear edges of the panel.

Each bracket is fabricated from 0.08 in (approximately 2.0 mm) 5052 aluminum sheet and formed using standard sheet metal bending operations.

The brackets serve two primary functions within the system.

  • Panel Interface
The outer face of each bracket aligns with the MOLLE slot pattern on the panel. Bolts pass through dedicated mounting holes and secure the panel to the brackets using serrated flange nuts with thread locker.
Using dedicated mounting holes avoid wasting precious mounting surface for marrying the panel to the bracket.
  • Console Interface
The inner geometry of the brackets extends toward the console structure. Through a series of controlled bends, the brackets establish contact surfaces that interact with the console geometry identified during earlier development stages.
These surfaces contribute to the compression-based retention system that captures the console without relying solely on fixed fasteners.

Installation Characteristics

The final assembly installs without drilling, cutting, or otherwise modifying the vehicle interior.

During installation, the bracket system captures the console geometry and distributes loads across multiple contact surfaces. Controlled compression between the brackets and the console structure stabilizes the panel assembly.

For the contoured panel configuration, the factory console fastener provides an additional positional reference while the bracket system continues to provide the primary structural support.

Both panel configurations remain removable without permanent modification to the console.

Development Outcome

The completed mounting system represents the result of multiple design iterations involving bracket geometry, bend spacing, console interface surfaces, and panel form.

Through these refinements, the design evolved from an initial concept based on geometric constraint into a stable and repeatable assembly capable of consistent installation within the console environment.

The final system maintains the original design objectives: providing a secure MOLLE mounting platform while preserving the integrity of the vehicle interior and allowing removal without permanent modification.
